I would suggest buying a Netgear or Linksys router. They usually have a built in firewall. You can also buy Zone Alarm which is a software firewall which works well. The routers usually do not have a full fledged firewall but a simple one. The Zone Alarm is pretty easy to use and offers great protection.

Windows XP SP2 has a built-in firewall that is not complicated to use if you don't use Bittorrent or play online video games. If you do, try Sygate Personal Firewall.

windows xp sp2 as a firewall. it is not advisable to have two fire walls running at the same time so if you go for the zone alarm which is free them make sure you switch off Microsoft's firewall

You might try Zone Alarm. It is easy to install and set up. The Internet updates are small, usually around 16KB or less so you won't be waiting forever for an update to download.

If you're using Windows XP, it has a built-in firewall. Otherwise, check out Download.com for free firewalls. They are rated so I'd pick a highly rated, free one.
