I looked at a house yesterday, it was empty, but there was a slight mildew smell. Two rooms had old rugs. The house was built in 1978, it is right near wetlands.Could the smell have been coming from outside? It was in good shape, freshly painted.Could mildew be in the walls?

one of the old rugs had a lot of brown stains, I am really hoping it is those old ruges, the smell was stronger at that end of the house. It also has 3 skylights, one in each bedroom where the old rugs are, and one in the living room

Yes, and its probably under that fresh paint. Don't buy it.

It can be very tough to tell where the smell is coming from. My advice would be to call a fire restoration company like Service Master to come in and check it out they have machines to remove odors left by fire, flooding ect. They can be quite costly though. Just geve them a call and get an estimate. Good luck.

Ever notice the warning on the bottle of mildew remover?
It says use in a well ventilated area. Duh! If it was a well ventilated area there wouldn't be mildew. That's the key... ventilation.
Mildew grows in damp poorly ventilated areas.
A little ventilation will go a long way in preventing mildew and the odor.

use a dehumidifier. the house needs to be "dried out," bcuz without moisture, mould and mildew can't spread. hope this helps

You can always get it inspected for mold.
The mold removal process can be costly.
Another option is a good air purifier.
Let it run for a few days and see if you can notice a difference.
