They did this on the discovery channel a while ago with computer graphics and the lion won. However they had the lion sneak up while the tiger was eating so it wasn't a fair fight. The tiger is bigger than the lion and hunts for itself and is more fierce. So I think a tiger would win - in a 'fair' fight.

This is a biology question.Not Psychology. That would dependon the energy levels of the opposing animals. A tiger is more massive and larger. A tiger can withstadn cold climates better than a lion.But, a Lion can withstand the Afican heat. So the terrain is also a factor. It also depends on their age and health conditions. Hard to say.

my friend says the lion wins every time.
but because lions are social animals and
practiced in fighting.
the tiger goes for the throat, only to kill.
because killing to eat is its business.
the tiger is stronger and more powerful.
but does not have the type of fighting expereince
the lion brings.
but the lion will hurt and injure, based on its
experience with social fighting.
the lion does not just go for the throat to kill.
the lion hurts a paw to get an advantage.
the different styles make a difference.

Have you ever seen the two together?
Forget about Zoo's. I went to Africa once and saw there. The ones in the Zoo's are like concentration camp victims (no offence to zoo keepers). So there was a Tiger there as well.
The Lion. No contest.
Since this is a psychology question I will suggest that more solitary types chose tiger and more family oriented types chose lion.
