Recently found out my partner has a sperm count of 12.5millionl/ml and bad motility. We have been reffered to a fertility clinic but have not yet got an appointment. I realise that our chances of conceiving naturally are low but was wondering if anyone has any success stories to cheer me up a bit and give me a little bit of hope. Thanks.

you can have low sperm count and still conceive naturally. It really depends on how much of your sperm that you do have is healthy. you can be above normal in your sperm count, but the size, shape and the health of your sperm could be very low. So just relax and have fun. Try to get some sperm friendly help.

I think ensuring that your husband's nutrition is very good will help. Zinc + folic acid supplements have been shown to increase the number of viable sperm by 74%! Get him to take a good multivit and eat a balanced diet. Alcohol and smoking also reduce sperm counts so cut out those if he uses them. That should give the sperm he has a fighting chance!

My husbands parents were told they wouldn't be able to conceive naturally, they had been trying to conceive for 6 years, they tried everything. They adopted a beautiful baby boy and one year later my mother in law got pregnant! then she had another 2 children..My husband also has low sperm count we have been trying to conceive for 3 years but my parents in law are my example, so don't lose hope, you will get pregnant, just pray a lot, I will pray for you.

i will need to know your age, and whether you have any other factor apart from low sperm count. for e.g. whether ur tubes are patent and whether ur menses are normal. presence or absense of any other anatomic abnormality. also let me know how long have u been trying for pregnancy.
assuming there r no ther factors apart from oligospermia (low sperm count), u will need to tell me the motility, to be exact - rapid progressive motility (combined grade 3&4 after 30 min.). add some more detail like the percentage of abnormal forms. again add some more detail like what kind of abnormal forms are predominant, e.g., head abnormalities, or tail abnormalities, etc.
the treatment now will depend on all these factors and needs to be individualised. there are no fixed formula. why dont u put yr hubby on mesterolone for 3 months, which will increase the sperm count.avoid alcohol and cigarettes.
and then may b u can go for intra-uterine insemination with washed sperms, where they remove non-motile and abnormal forms as they form impediments for the rapid progressive ones.
i guess i can give these guidelines without knowing full details. best of luck.

Please see the web pages for more details on Sperm count and In vitro fertilisation. Assisted reproductive techniques involve manipulation of sperm and ova in vitro with the goal of producing an embryo.
