Age of empires 3 help?

Question

can any one tell me what i need to do just to start a game and built slowly an empire it seems if i go into skirmish it only last about half an hour and you only get to build a small town only got it the other day and never played it before, i just want to start small built a small town into a big town with castle and walls and hugh army and then go exploring--if i go into single player you just seem to do a heap of different missions and by the time you have a big army the mission is complete what do i need to do.

Put the settings on "non-violent". You will then be able to do what you ant to;
