My best friend loves to eat tissue, not just chew but swallow as well. I have told her this must be doing some sort of damage to her insides but she will not listen and quite frankly I am tired of her eating my last roll of Andrex (Best quality she says).

Does anyone know what this habit is called or what it is doing to her?

Pure toilet tissue is made up from Delta B Cellulose, which is a pure sugar chain, and if she chewed it for long enough, it would go incredibly sweet n her mouth, like with bread.

however, if it has been treated with some sort of alum and size, an animal glue to prevent it from falling to bits in contact with water, as I suspect it has, then the damage may be a little bit more long term. The resins used with the low grade animal size are not what I would like to chew upon, and god forbid that they have used any re-cycled pulp, which has to be chemically cleaned to remove ink residues.

Unlike rag paper, made from cotton - which they put into Mc Donalds milk shakes, wood pulp has a few other little chemicals. the sugar chains are surrounded by Ligniun, which is a network polymer resin which has a high attractiuon towards sulphur, thus will turn to mild sulphuric acid in sunlight, the reason newspapers turn yellow -

to stop this, the tissue is treated by adding chalk, but dont worry they add that to cheap white flour in breadmaking - and this helps combat the acid in the resins. however, other substances, like the chemicals they used to break down the wood pulp may lay within the chalk as a residue, and the effect is culmulative, so the more tissue she chomps, the more chemicals she will build up in her kidneys and liver.

It would take an awful lot of tissue to kill her, but since it is not designed as a food stuff, nobody monitors the chemical residue levels within it, and also the size used may be from cows which have suffered Mad Cows or from Sheep with Scrappey... its not a risk I would like to take.

the habit is called madness, and suggest your friend tries chewing bread, which has the same sugars within it, but has been made with food quality indgrediants.

Some movies have portrayed drinking bleach as being instantaneously fatal. The truth, however, is that bleach burns the tissues on the way down so people who drink it end up with burns to the inside of the mouth and the esophagus. As you might imagine, this is quite painful. It CAN result in death (especially if the burn goes all the way through the esophagus and causes perforation) but the resultant death is slow and painful. When the mouth and esophagus heal, they can form scars and areas of narrowing that make it very difficult to eat in the future.

An awful lot of toilet tissue is made from recycled paper and as a consequence is treated with many chemicals including bleach. So, while it is obviously not a good idea, her toilet bowl will sparkle like never before... ;~)

That's weird. It probably doesn't have any lasting effects because it's just paper fiber. I would be more concerned about the chemicals it's treated with. Also, it is generally recycled paper. Remind her that someone else could have wiped with it and then it was recycled. Maybe that will get her to stop.

So long as it's clean and she doesn't eat too much of it all at once, it's unlikely to do any damage to her. Paper has no nutritional value, but it will disintegrate in and pass through a person's body if it is eaten.

I don't know what paper eating is called, but toilet paper is probably the best kind to eat because it dissolves so easily. It wouldn't be as likely to clog her up as other paper. She still can't digest it, but probably just passes it harmlessly.

this is sometimes related to eating disorders as eating the tissue fills you up so then you wont want to eat food. many dancers etc do this...
you should look into this further....
all the best to your friend....

Hi,
Of course I don't beleive a bit of that, who would in a right mind eat bog paper ?
I suppose that if you did, severe constipation is in order.
I assume therefore - the best bet is to chew on shark steaks
. It gives you the runs. Or it did to me, anyway.
Bob.
