I went to the gynecologist a few weeks ago to get checked (see my other question) and I was put on birth control pills though I am not sexually active. I was actually on my period a couple of weeks ago (the 6th) and now am bleeding lightly again and have cramps. Is this a normal side effect for the pill?

Should I also continue taking the pill if I do start to bleed?

It's perfectly normal to get breakthrough bleeding during the first three to six months of starting the pill. Keep taking the pills as normal, don't stop taking the pills, even if you are bleeding. Once your body has adjusted to them, the pills will tell your body when to bleed.

If after 3-6 months, you are still having trouble with breakthrough bleeding, then go back to your doctor as they will need to give you a different dosage. I went through about 6 different types before I found one that was right for me.

Yes, until your body gets use to it. Other side effects can be weight gain, shorter periods and less cramping
