Babies instinctually cry when they are born to clear out their airways.

Because crying in this natural reaction does not have the sense of "perception" by the newborn child but it is a physiological response to the sudden change of enviroment from maternal womb to cold and aggresive outside.

In the womb, the child breaths through the umbilical cord but at the moment the doctor pulls out the baby and cut the cord the reaction is to breathe through lungs. The doctor spanks the baby just to help him/her to expel mucous material and let the air gets the lungs (in that moment, the baby cries).

Good luck!

It has been proven that an infant in the womb is sensitive to sound and light and external stimuli.
Therefore a newly born infant would also be subject to light, cold, noise etc.

It was once believed that babies felt no pain and were given circumcisions without anesthetic. Medicine and science has come a long way in proving that human beings are cognizant while in utero.

Studies were done on infants who after birth were placed in the middle of two men, one being their father. The two men would talk to the baby and coo at it. The baby would inevitably 9 times out of 10 turn toward the voice of it's father. This is why doctors and expectant moms will say that exposing infants while in utero to soothing music is a good thing, and why dads should not be left out of this process, encouraging dad to speak to his baby while it is in the mothers womb.

a child spends 9 months scrunched up surrounded by lots of warmth and water and is then suddenly thrust into a much different atmosphere that is cold and uncomfortable, so they cry. a child can feel, sense and perceive just a few weeks after conception. why do you think we fight AGAINST abortion. babies do have perception prior to birth. knowledge is not always gained though the senses. you also have to take into consideration instinct.

The senses start developing before birth so the information is there. Crying is a reaction to the expansions of the lungs as the newborn comes out and take its first breath of air. Is is a reaction, kinda like an instinct. Some doctors think this is actually painful and that is why they cry.

What makes you think the child has no perception? The kid has just been squeezed through a too-small opening and dumped into an environment 25° too cold. Kid feels all of that. No to mention something much like drowning, but in reverse. Kid can hear, too, and if the eyes open, way more light than normal, not to mention nasty chemical eyedrops. It adds up to a whole lot of pain and unpleasantness. You'd cry, too.

i think its false that a child has no knowledge or perception,,,,, and often its a case of "you will find/see what you are looking for" if you assume they do , and that they are aware of their surroundings and are thinking their thoughts,,,, often you may be surprised that you see signs of that,,,,,,my newborn could certainly distinguish between me and the nurses,,,, she was born and looked directly around, focused in on things,,,, looked at peoples faces,, even the staff commented on it,,, yet i had never imagined that she wouldnt be born as a thinking/knowing/perceptive little person,,,,,she wasnt born as a totally blank slate, so while yes, part is to clear their lungs, a biological function, that doesnt explain it all, they cry to communicate,,, and if you watch closely, they will communicate in other ways,,,,

They are responding to a brand new environment in the only way they can communicate. It was dark and warm and comfortable in their mother's womb. The world is cooler lighter and far less comfortable; I feel like crying right now!

And by the way, I don't believe that the senses are how we learn everything. No culture congratulates a traitor; no one values a friend who betrays. Liars are not sought out for advisers. These elemental values are brought with us into the world.
I remember at three years old telling a lie, and knowing it was wrong. We all start off with God's concept of right and wrong written into us. Though cultures can rob us of any memory of those values if they get to us early enough.
Anyone for preschool?

this is a natural reaction, and it helps clear the lungs, and make sure the lungs work. It is an instictive thing. The doc will pat the foot only when the baby isn't crying on thier own. And if you were being squeezed through an opening that tight you would probably cry too!!

Perhaps the baby cries to protest the injustice of having been thrown into the unkind open world from the secure comfortable mother's womb!

By the way, baby has genes which store considerable knowledge and traits learnt through the process of evolution.

Most children cry because they are spanked, this is because they react to the stimulus of pain. The nurse or the doctor or midwife may spank the baby to unblock the airways, so that the child may breathe. I do not think this has to be learned by any baby or child - it is a natural reaction.
