Last night, I dropped a trash can on my big toe right at the base of the nail. Wow! It really hurt! I put ice on it - helped a little. I couldn't sleep last night because it was throbbing and hurt so much. I took Ibuprofen, but that only helped a little. The nail is dark purple, but there is no external blood. It feels like it's under pressure. Is it necessary to go to the doctor? I doubt it's broken. Besides, there's nothing a doc can do about a broken toe. What can I do to make it feel better?

Don't wear any tight shoes for awhile..

Elevate your foot as much as possible.. It feels like it is under pressure because you have a hematoma.. a pooling of blood under the nail (the purple). After 48 hours of ice every hour for 20 min... you can switch to heat if you feel that makes it more comfortable....

Other then that there isn't much you can do...

If your toe becomes ashey grey, there is a greenish discharge around the cuticle, or the pressure becomes unbearable, then you should see the doc.

I'm so sorry you smashed yout toe.. Been there and it hurts like a sun of a gun.

Take care

Not a whole lot, beyond what other well-informed posters have posted.

If the pain is really bad a doctor can prescribe 800mg of ibuprofen, that is the prescription strength. The other thing you can do is inbetween your ibuprofen dosing you can take extra strength tylenol -- space these evenly out. They are not related so they can both be taken as long as you have no liver problems or ulcers.

go to the dr. they can drill a hole in the nail to allow the blood to escape. don't worry, it doesn't hurt & you'll get relief.
