He's brave for simply being in the battlefield; and, yes, arguably, he's brave for taking cover. Many men find it easier to die than to live on, face the horror and get the job done.

A soldier takes cover because doing so increases his adds of survival. He is neither a coward nor brave, he is just reacting out of his survival instinct that we were all born with, but he has developed to a higher level due to training and sometimes exposure to real combat.

War today, or war years ago? War today has changed into guerrilla warfare, where surprised attacks are used. In war years ago, that was face to face combat. So if it's guerrilla warfare, I would say it wasn't a coward. Old conventional warfare, I would say yes.

I wouldn't say he's a coward .. it's better to be a smart warrior then it is to be a dead warrior.. Japan lost its war because they would deliberately sacrificed their soldiers to try to overwhelm their enemy..

he's smart, but he is also brave. fighting in a war is being brave and courageous at the same time.
