Not sure what you mean, but my mum was just complaining about a couple friends she has who send out these LONG list of achievements of their grandkids and famous people they know, etc., along w/the Xmas card. So...if you want to keep friends, don't do THAT!
Just say what you think people might be wondering about you, with some significant events. No bragging!
If you're asking how to make letters, from a technical standpoint, all you need is something like MS Word, a computer (or even an old typewriter!) and a copier! Print it up at a place like Staples (use some festive paper) or on your own printer.

If you've ever gotten one from another person LEt me tell ya, they are boring. Its great to hear that Johnny learned to use the potty last week and that your dog passed away, but the people your close to... Already know these things!
