Usually we go for the easier, and less attention-needing fake Christmas tree, however this year we tried to go o’ natural and now I am beginning to remember why. Is there anything I can do to spare myself from having to vacuum up those annoying little piney things almost everyday?

First, you should the freshest tree possible. Pre-cut trees are often a couple weeks old before you even see them, so they're going to be about a month old when you put it up. If possible, go to a tree farm a couple weeks before Christmas and cut your own. That way, you have as close to the tree of your dreams as possible, and much fresher, too. (Remember, artificial trees aren't biodegradable, and supporting tree farms helps the environment.)

Before you put the tree in the stand, cut about 1" off the bottom of the trunk. This gets rid of any solidified sap, and allows the tree to take in water. Speaking of which, check the water level daily. If you have to fill it often, that means it's drinking a lot, which is good. I've heard about using Sprite, sugar, honey, even aspirin, but I prefer to use Prolong. It's non-toxic to humans or pets, and you only use a couple tablespoons per gallon of water. Hint: stock up after Christmas, when everything's half-price!

Also, check your tree daily by loosely holding a branch near the trunk, then running your hand outwards along the branch. If more than a few needles come off, your tree is too dry and should be taken down.

You're going to get some needles on the floor no matter what you do, but this way there won't be so many, and the tree won't become a fire hazard.

Add some sugar or honey to the water for the tree. Keep the water filled. Don't put the tree up too early. A week or two beforehand is fine.

Trees shed when they die. That is life. Arrange your room so that you will be able to catch the most needles possible. Put plastic under the tree. Also, there are big bags you can put over the tree as you take it out of the house.

I have heard that some people put sprite in the water, It is said to make it not drop needles so bad. We have tried it. It works pretty good.
