they are both good...although i would go with lord of the rings. I think its easier to follow, where as harry potter is tough to follow if you didnt read the books

Harry Potter Yahooooooooooooooooooooooo Harry Potter is way better then the Lord Of The Rings. More action in Harry Potter and you get a better understand.

Moviewise? Or bookwise? They have in common that the books are better than the movies; I think, however, the intended spirit is captured in the Harry Potter movies slightly better than in the LOTR movies. There is SO much subtlety in LOTR that is lost in the transition to screen that the gap is wider there. However, for sheer effectiveness and scale, LOTR really has it.
Personally, I watch the Potter movies more often, but I think that is because I get too involved in LOTR and cannot get things done. That's a good question; it is nigh unto impossible to choose, so I'll just have to be one of those undecideds.
Now if you're asking for the sake of Dan Radcliffe vs. Elijah Wood, well, they're both too young for me--I'd have to go with Sean Bean or Viggo Mortensen...Cheers!

Moviewise, Harry Potter. Bookwise, Harry Potter. Lord of The Rings could never match the success of the HP books. But although LOTR has won more awards and seems to more appreciated by critics, it seems that HP has many more fans all overe the world. And the only thing that matters is the public's opinion, right? ;)

Of course Lord Of The Rings... Peter Jackson did an amazing job directing it! Unlike HP movies which seem a lot like children's movies.
