Goo Gone does an excellent job of removing adhesive left behind from stickers and tape. I have used it on painted walls without harming the paint.

A wonderful product called "UnDu" will remove that
sticky stuff and won't hurt the paint or wallpaper. Just
squirt some onto a rag and rub gently.

There is a product called 'Goof-off' that works quite well. You also use nail polish remover, lighter fluid or acetone.

Check your local hardware store for a product from 3M that removes adhesives. I used this product to remove cork board from a wood cabinet, and it works very well.
