Membership of the EU is not decided by who is cool and who is not. It is decided by whether the prospective country has a sufficiently advanced economy, and has performed enough social reform. The EU can't let in very poor countries because then the rich countries would spend disproportionate amounts supporting them. Nor can it let in countries that have different social values, as this would lead the government of the EU being filibustered every time it wanted to bring in new social laws. Turkey and Greece still pretty much hate each other, and you cannot have a community where two members aren't on speaking terms. Once they kiss and make up then maybe Turkey will be considered in a better light. Turkey will almost certainly not join the EU before 2015, if it conducts the proper reforms.

NO.There is significant public opposition in Austria, Germany, France and Spain.
It could extend the EU's borders to Iraq, Iran and Syria, threatening stability. Its size and poverty could also drain EU resources, and there could be a wave of Turkish migrants across Europe.
Turkey has been criticised for its record on religious freedom and violence against women.
Allegations that it systematically tortures prisoners and detainees have not gone away. Turkey's independent Human Rights Association (IHD) says the security forces have switched to torture methods which leave no trace, such as sleep or food deprivation.

Turkey is not in Europe except for the bit they stole from Greece when the Muslims last invaded Europe.

Is this Turkey issue being raised as a means of bringing the outrageously fascist Israel to 'the club'? That is, once the criteria of geographical location is removed, our wonderful western friends can join.

First where in Turkey have you been? probably in Istanbul and how much of it have you seen? Probably a little .So stop saying nonsence. What good would Turkey bring in Europe? In fact i believe that only bad would bring and they would always agree with Bush to. They are more imperialists than anyone in the world but they do not have so much millitary power so to open the wars they have in the back of their mind.

It would be a major feat of civil engineering to bring Turkey into Europe as most of it is in Asia.

No thank you. Enough people in Europe. Enough is enough!.... Tell u what, what don't we form a WORLD state where everyone is free to go anywhere and do anything whenever they want? That's what's happening in Europe. Not meaning to put a downer on the words democracy and freedom, but we've got too much of both now that it's messed up the place completely

you no wot i hate when people try to give advice and they don't know what they are talking about so if your one of them, like a few people on this page just keep your mouth shut.
yes i do think Turkey is a cool country, i went there last summer and it was beautiful best holiday ever and i was shocked at how modern it was but it still had its culture, i think the EU should beg for Turkey to join the EU coz its nicer and got more to offer then most of the countries in it. sure, when they open their air/sea-ports to Greece.

and do all the other things.

they get all the same economic benefits that a full EU member gets anyway - the only thing left is an extra star

(will they do that? - add and extra star?)

I agree, they are much better than the Greek Cypriots and several other new member countries.
I go to Istanbul often and they are polite and educated people in general.
They have an old culture and good cuisine that would contribute to the EU.
