Feel free to expand your opinion, I'd like to read them but am wondering if they're really all that great or are they cheesy. Do they have good storylines? I like Harry Potter and Tolkien's stuff (and I love dragons as a rule), do you think I'd like these books?

I havn't read them, but I understand they're very good.

ERAGON was 26 consecutive weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.

ELDEST has been 60 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.

But my biggest recommendation to you is:
Before you jump into reading the books, watch the movie. It's a good movie. I loved it. But from what I've read, the movie really changes the book and many who have read the books and loved them, have become very disappointed by the movie.

So if you watch the movie first, you can avoid disappointment. And apparently the books are much better...so you can look forward to more greatness after seeing the movie. :D

Anyway to give a straight answer to your question, yes they are good. And yes, I do believe you'll like them if you like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.

Well I agree w/ the opposite that this is a fine ebook. But I will cross extra=] Eragon was once slightly sluggish, now not simply within the few chapters, however the first 250 pages. So after studying ti part means, I stopped. Then I noticed the film. The film was once def. now not that well, or dependable to the ebook, so far as I remmebered however the plot was once so exciting, that I despite the fact that identification begin eragon once more. I DIDN'T start from the begining on account that There wasn't a lot I had to do not forget the primary 250 pages are virtually, the butcher, the egg, taking good care of sahphira, and assembly brom and stale they cross. I simply completed eragon two nights in the past, and cherished it. The subsequent part of the ebook is exotic. The first part isn';t to unhealthy, however def. a sluggish velocity. I am now opening eldest, and that my pal, wil seize you with the primary web page. It is fine thus far and way more motion packed. But of path in trilogys the primary part of the ebook is consistently a mild bore, like lotr and inkheart trilogy. So I relatively advocate you learn it. The books are my #three in my most sensible three favourite books. And I have learn over a ebook each two days, so approximately three books per week. So virtually I hve learn alot. Eragon & eldest and the following ebook are certain to thrill you.

Yes, the Eragon books are good. I find them to be unique and creative, although, as others have said, Tolkien's is much more artistically written. I did enjoy the setting and story line that the books followed, but in some parts (especially in the sequal, Eldest) the author seemed to be trying too hard to put detail and words together, that it got a bit boring during of few of the longer conversations. Besides that, the series is quite good, and definately worth reading!

I read the first Eragon book but found it somewhat tedious. The writing is competent but derivative and lacks the heart, soul, and sense of humor one finds in both JK Rowling and JRR Tolkien's writing. "Eragon" felt like a paint-by-numbers version of Lord of the Rings; it was full of fantasy clichés and flat characters.

If you ask me, I think the reason the books have gotten so much attention is partly because the boy who wrote them did a competent job at a very young age and just happened to belong to a wealthy family who could afford to get the work the attention they feel it deserves. Children and younger adolescents who aren't quite up to reading the "Lord of the Rings" series enjoy "Eragon" because it gives them a sneak peak of Tolkienesque literature without the more difficult language and themes.

I have heard that the second book ("The Eldest"?) was much better, but I'm afraid it would have to have been a vast improvement for me to be even mildly impressed.

In other words, they're great books to buy for your 12-year old nieces or nephews to encourage them to read something, anything, rather than sitting around watching t.v. or playing videos all day, but they set no literary precedent.

Yes they are awesome books. I just happened to walk past them in wal-mart and thought they looked okay. I read them and now im impatiently waiting for the 3rd in the series to come out. I also love harry potter and tolkiens books. And dragons are sweet, so these are awesome books to read. I highly recommend.

They're not too bad, though it depends on what you like. They're really just your average, typical fantasy books, much the same as many other fantasy stories. You could give them a try, but I doubt you'd be fabulously impressed. They're certainly not as good as Tolkien's books.

Well, if you have read the Lord of the Rings, there is nothing you will miss. Im not saying that is necessarily a bad thing, it was an exciting read. You will be shocked at how close to plagiarism it comes. But hey, it was a fun read. Nothing revolutionary.

They are good stories, but not very good literature. They are a lot like the lotr series, but at a much lower reading level.

They're OK, but nowhere near the level of Tolkein.
