emachines have a (well-earned) bad rep, and I would never buy one myself. However, for someone with not a lot of money to spend, no other computer, and just basic computer needs, they can be an okay starter machine. They are a bit better now since Gateway owns them, but I still wouldn't want one myself.
Compaq, as noted, is owned by HP. Again, I wouldn't buy one myself, but I would recommend compaq over emachines, and sometimes you can find one around the same price.
I had an HP laptop for 4 years, and it was okayh, not great, but it did the job. I would consider buying an HP desktop, but would not buy another HP laptop, because the internal power source (where cord plugs in) tends to have issues.
I got a used Toshiba laptop for my daughter, and it's been a great computer for her, lots of use and few problems, other than being ancient by computer standards. I also bought a used thinkpad some years back, and it also was good, but I wouldnt buy another.
I currently have a Gateway laptop, and I love it. It has given me no problems, and I am a power user, using it 12+ hours a day. I have heard things about gateway, but have not personally experienced problems. One of my sons has a gateway desktop, and they thought it was slow, but once I tweaked it for them and added a RAM chip, they like it very much now.
If you are wanting to purchase a desktop computer, I would recommend either building one yourself, or going to a local computer store and having them build one to your specs. Most will let you purchase all the hardware then put it together for you for $50 or so, add another $45 if you want them to install the operating system for you. So for $50-100 l;abour and the cost of the hardware, you have a computer built to your own specs.

Compaqs, im fairly certain, arent even called compaqs anymore. They are a branch of HP. And, they are reliable machines. NOT the best! ever, but still good for ur money. However, emachines, though not inredibly powerful, honestly are the best bang for your buck. They are cheap, and they work. The best pc (not best best, but best as in most recognizable) would be Sony. I have a sony viao. Hp is also good. Dells, and Gateways you should STAY AWAY FROM. seriously. Dells have so many problems, and gateways arent much better. Never go with a mail away pc. They tend to always have more problems. So, sum it up... Best bang for buck, Emachine, great pc, HP, best PC, Sony Viao (or other sony if there are any). Hope that answers ur question! Merry xmas! (or happy (insert holiday here) )

i dont know about nowadays, but i have an emachine that im using right now... i got it about 3 years ago.
pros: its got all the good hookups, ethernet, 4 usb ports, (2 in the front of the comp in a little slot.. along with a mic hookup) and not to mention, it looks pretty cool, lol black and silver.
cons: on my personal emachine, it only came with 128mbs of ram. so i had to buy five hundred something mbs of ram to add on to it. and also, with games nowadays, the graphics card in this computer SUCKS. its ok.. but not if you want to play newer and 3d games. ill have to be updating on that as well.
but all in all, a pretty good computer :)
