Marijuana was outlawed for two major reasons.
The first was because "All Mexicans are crazy and marijuana is what makes them crazy." The second was the fear that heroin addiction would lead to the use of marijuana -- exactly the opposite of the modern gateway myth.
You can find a good discussion of the subject at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/mj_outlawed.htm
You can find a good short history at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/History/whiteb1.htm
You can find the full transcripts of the hearings for the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/hemp/taxact/taxact.htm
Some people may tell you that it was a conspiracy between William Randolph Hearst, the DuPonts, and Harry Anslinger. This is wrong. You can read a discussion of this idea at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/hemp_conspiracy.htm
The modern reason for keeping marijuana illegal has been the "gateway" myth - the idea that marijuana leads to heroin. You can find a history and discussion of this idea at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/library/gateway_myth.htm
Most people who answer these questions have absolutely no clue about the subject. Do not accept answers from anyone who cannot give you references.

I agree with you - it seems to me that people are much more likely to get paranoid and violent when they drink too much.
If someone is going to overindulge, yes, much better for society that they have a joint than booze. But not while it's illegal. I don't either, but I can't see that it does any harm to those who do. Maybe the answer is to sell it only for consumption in your own home?
Wouldn't it be great if cars had breathalysers built in, so they wouldn't start up if there was excessive alcohol in the air? A gadget like that would save lives.

Like many things, the true answer has nothing to do with safety or health, and everything to do with politics.
The Alcohol lobby are institutionalized in this company. They are a house hold name (By house of course I mean Congress and Senate) they have tremendous clout in government so they are almost impossible to get rid of. Even when they were banned, they made a come back to legalization.

Because you can get wasted Sunday night and still go to work Monday morning (with a hangover, but you can get around that)
However, if you get stoned on Sunday night, you will be too lazy to get ANYTHING done then next day. Plus, high driving is the same as drunk driving. Getting high doesn't exactly speed up your reflexes, does it??

I had a friend driving while "stoned",he had a near fatal accident when he slammed into a van stopped at a stop sign.Luckily no one was killed, but there were severe injuries.Depth perception is altered when you smoke pot,you may think that car is yards away when in fact it is only inches.Driving stoned is no better than driving drunk.

Because the lawmakers are too busy having sex with their pages to do anything about it. Write your congressman and tell him to leave that kid alone and get to work fixing these stupid broken laws!
