If an incident occured, and you want to sue someone for it, how much time do you have to open a lawsuit? What if something occured in the past, and you only found out about it recently, would I still be able to sue the guilty party?

You have to be more specific. Statute of limitations laws vary from state to state and can range anywhere from a year to seven years. There are no limitations on murder.

There are also incidents where the statute of limitations is 'tolled' or doesn't apply. An example would be medical malpractice that isn't discovered until years later. (Say a woman had her appendix out and they cut her tubes by mistake and it wasn't discovered for a long time.)

You should consult an attorney liensed in the state in question.

In Texas you have about two years to file a claim in the way of a lawsuit for like a car accident. I'm not sure about any other lawsuits.

well technically in america after 7 years a crime or w/e is no longer considered available for trial or punishment. so to explain better if i were to kill the president and no one supsected me and i got away for 7 years and came back to america then im a free person. but if your suspected to be the person who committed a crime and they dont catch you for 15 years your still able to be tri-ed and punished because they suspected it may have been you. so it depends on how long ago it was and what it was. something small and stupid 5 years ago they prolly wont take that to court but if it was a failry decent crime then you have a possibility. hope this helps

It depends entirely on the crime and your state. Not all crimes have a statute of limitations and they are different for different crimes. Generally, there is some recourse for crimes even years after the fact.
