It all depends on the type of car you want. High end luxury cars will be at least 7 years old for that price while cars with less status will be younger. In fact, if you pitch in some extra cash you can get a brand new 2007 Hyundai Accent which starts at $10,415.

I don't totally agree with the answer you received from wi_saint. Never trust a dealership for advice, they want your money and will tell you what they think you want to hear. The Ford Explorer is only the best American SUV, there are far superior SUV's out there. You might think the Camaro has good lines if you've appeared on the Jerry Springer show. The Isuzu I-Mark and any Isuzu for that matter are total crap.
Your best bets over all and hands down are Toyota/Lexus/Scion, Honda/Acura, or Subaru. Check consumer Reports on these three auto makers and you will see they blow everyone else out of the water. Even higher priced auto makers can't touch them.
The front runners in my opinion would be Toyota Corolla, Honda Accord, or Subaru Legacy.
Start with these three cars and you will get a real good idea for comparison. Good luck and don't forget to run a carfax report before buying.

I suggest talking to a dealer and telling them what your needs/desires are, and you can also check out your local auto trader magazines for your area.
but for suggestions here...
For gasoline engines:
Toyota Camry....long life and reliable
Ford Escape...best of the SUV's
Early to mid 90's Mustangs
Chevy Camaro...Plentiful, good looks, and can get reasonable mileage with tuning.
Don't forget about diesel engines
They can be set to run on used cooking grease, and bio-diesel is on the fast track as a standard fuel.
AND the new engines are more quiet and just as powerful as the gas counterparts.
The best diesel that I have ever seen was a 1984 Izuzu I-Mark
I now drive a 1986 F350 Quad Cab.
Not recomended if you are wanting creature comforts or wanting to go hunt for girls with your buddies...
BUT it is an AWESOME work horse!

You have to decide what you're looking for.
You could get a older luxury car like an Audi, or a newer ordinary car like a Honda.
Do you have a need for speed or gas mileage?

that depend on which country you are in, if for me Toyota and Nissan will be the most preferable, because the spare part is easy to find as i no need to wait for the part to import from the country, which is Japan. the car for me which is durable is Nissan, (course i had a Nissan sunny from 1980,the only thing i change is the Tyre, battery and only the minor defect, no major defect until now)

i dont comprehend yet in my u . s . I could desire to used up extra beneficial than 20,000 ok. bike is far less costly and decrease priced even however there are various unavoided cons. possibly that's risky to experience on a bike yet once you regularly be careful, i think of you would be high quality except people crash on you by twist of fate.
