It means that you multiply the number but itself. For example 5 'squared' is 25 and 8 'squared' is 64. This can also be said has x to the power if 2, if you let x be the number you want it to be. But both ways are written the same- a tiny 2 bedide the top right hand corner of the number.
You can also do the opposite and find the square route- finding a number than when you multiply by it self becomes the oringal number. It's a bit hard to explain.
For example the square route of 49 is 7 because 7x7=49. Understand? Whatever you do, don't get square and square roots mixed up!
You can also cube a number. This is x to the power of 3. For example the cube of 3 is 27, because 3x3x3=27.

squared is any number multiplied by itself
5 squared is 5 X 5 = 25
6 squared is 6 X 6 = 36
2 squared is 2 X 2 = 4
On an expanded note squared can also be expressed as 5 to the 2nd power.
So 5 cubed or 5 to the 3rd power is
5 X 5 X 5 = 125
or 2 cubed or 2 to the 3rd power is
2 X 2 X 2 = 8
And so on for all the other powers

5 squared is 5 x 5.
"Square roots" is another term. If you had a number, say 144, you would have to find the two equal numbers (12 and 12), to be the square. The numbers have to be the same.
Another Example:
9 x 9
5 cubed is 5 x 5 x 5.
If you're already into square roots, pretty soon you'll be in cubed terms!
Good Luck!

5 x 5, which equals 25. When you square a number, you always times the number being squared by itself, examples:
2^2 = 4
3^2 = 9
6^2 = 36
9^2 = 81

the term squared means raise a base to the second power.
5 squared actually means 5^2 or 5 * 5 which is 25.

5 squared = 25, as it is 5 x 5. Squaring means you take the number and multiply it by itself. So 3 with a little 2 next to it means 3 times 3. If you see a 4 with a little 5 above it, it means 4 times 4 times 4 times 4 times 4 (multiply it by itself 5 times).

5 squared is 5 multiplied by itself (5 x 5) so equals 25
Going the other way, a square root of a number is the number that you have to multiply by itself to get the number you started with, so the square root of 25 is 5, because 5 x 5 = 25
