It is exam week, but in two of my classes, the exams don't start until tomorrow, and we've already gone over study guides. Yeah, yeah, I know I'm the teacher, but I am not feeling creative today. I am looking for something they can sit quietly and do.

Assign them an opinion piece on a subject about which you think they should be able to express an opinion. Give them about half the class time to write their draft and then put them into small groups (3 to 5) and have them share with each other for 10 minutes before bringing the class back and having them share orally as a group.

Sample topics:

If the radio stations did not play Christmas music at this time of the year...

Schools should not be allowed to close for holidays.

The legal consequences for drinking and driving should be...

If the Internet were closed down for the holidays for a week....

How cell phones improve/worsen our lives....

And, of course, that old favorite - (if you don't have them) is that all students (and teachers - if you wish) should be required to wear school uniforms.

Write letters to anonymous residents of a nursing home that you drop off at the nursing station for distribution. Many people in nursing homes haven't gotten a letter in ten years. It would mean a lot coming from youngsters.

Take a bad poem (or a very old one)and let the students improve it (or modernize it), or write a story based on it. It is creative and fun.

Have them write letters to Santa Claus but for the person they love the most, not themselves.

Have them write thank you letters for their parents, or favorite teachers.

Read Christmas stories Out loud.

Color ( I taught middle school and once a year we had kindergarden day and amazingly if you give them crayons and pictures to color, they bliss out)
