the better question is, why does the rest of the world insist on trying to shove soccer down our throats? why do you care so much that we don't like it? anyway, sorry to have to tell you, but soccer is NOT getting more popular here, it will never approach the popularity of football, baseball, NASCAR, or basketball.

-well put, I have read lots of comments from americans not admiting why football/soccer is so popular in the world, that it is a complete bore, etc; but fail to realise that the whole world is not wrong; I do understand why it's not popular in USA, but USA should start admiting that soccer IS THE GAME in the world. just because the mayority of americans find it a bore does not mean that there is something wrong with the world or that the world should think same (lots of american have said that);I personally respect sport in general, American football, bascketball, baisball even nascar or cricket; don't like/understand them but I respect them

sorry pal, but soccer is no more popular here now than it was 30 years ago. small kids have been playing soccer here for many, many years, because a lot of mothers don't want their small kids playing the rough and dangerous game of football. that's where the term 'soccer mom' comes from. but by the time these kids reach high school age the girls turn to cheerleading, field hockey, and basketball. the boys turn to football and baseball. high school football on friday nights is a huge part of american culture. many high schools don't even have soccer teams, and for the ones that do the games are only attended by family members and close friends of the players. college football is a billion dollar industry here, but ask the average american sports fan who won the college soccer championship and they would not be able to tell you. pro football is a multi billion dollar industry, the pro soccer leauge here doesn't even have a network TV contract. even if i wanted to watch a soccer game on TV, which i don't, i have no idea what kind of obscure cable channels i would have to special order to watch one. it's just not on TV here because no one cares.

the better question is, why does the rest of the world insist on trying to shove soccer down our throats? why do you care so much that we don't like it? anyway, sorry to have to tell you, but soccer is NOT getting more popular here, it will never approach the popularity of football, baseball, NASCAR, or basketball.

I hate to say it, but I don't think football (soccer) is gaining much popularity in the US, certainly not overtaking American football, baseball, or basketball.
I'm a 33 year old woman who started playing soccer when I was 6 years old. At the time, the sport was very big with kids and I really thought as my generation grew up, the popularity would expand to adults. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. It is still hugely popular with youngsters, but it's just not catching the attention of the masses as adults.
Maybe that will change in time, but I really doubt it. Until then...I try to catch whatever games are aired in the US...but I suspect I'm one of the few.

I don´t think soccer is taking over America at all. We´ve had soccer fields for quite a long time. It´s nothing new for kids to play soccer on organized teams. I live in Europe now and yes soccer is huge but so is football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and Nascar in America. What I do think is American football is becoming very popular in Europe. Please just accept it.

For one, I don't think Americans care if soccer was taking over the world. Also, the word soccer mom has been around for decades and it applies to more then just to the moms whose kids play soccer. Even kids who play basketball, their moms carting them around in the mini vans are referred to soccer moms.

I have to give some credit to soccer players. They run an awful lot and you definitely need skills to play. Unfortunately though, they are weak athletes who pretend to fall down and be hurt so someone will get a yellow card on the other team. I think that is one reason why soccer isn't really respected in our country. It's played by a bunch of sissy's.

As an American(born and raised ;-), I not only accept it...I embrace it. I love the EPL and would love for it to be more accessible. The MLS is just not the same. But, there are many of us devoted enough to get up before dawn to watch tea time games. So, forgive us American fans if we must call it soccer...we know it's football...but many over here follow another football, confusion. That's OK, there is certainly enough room for both. **fingers crossed**

We do like soccer in the U.S., but it will not replace football. It's not just money, but culture and family history, also. Some families have several generations who attended the same schools and played for the same teams. This is not just a sport, it is literally a way of life for many people.

Although I love soccer as well as American football, I am quite certain it is not as popular. My youngest son (now 40 yo) played soccer in his youth and still likes to play year round but he's sometimes hard pressed to find teams in our area (southern NJ).
Soccer's popularity will not catch up until the media promotes it as much as it does football.

Your right children are playing it, when they grow up they put on pads and play a mans sport. Here soccer is for kids, its cute to see little Jimmy running around but a grown man crying over a missed field goal is just sad. Coincidentally, the only people who cry on the Football field are the kickers, who were converted soccer players.

Soccer is always popular on a school-level and back-yard, easy, but on an international competition level it will never get the TV audience it deserves for a long time yet. It's all about $$.
