Absolutely, they should have incentive to get all A's and B's, big incentive, because it is impossible for someone that is in highschool (or in a grade lower than highschool) to understand how important their grades are.

In response to Margaret (the response below me), yes, they are stupid. They are ignorant to the concept of getting grades to get into college because they have never experienced it. There is no way for a child to fully understand that until they go through it, and by then, it is too late. It is much better to have a backup plan on helping your kids get good grades, just incase they decide to rebel against you, which most kids will.

No because there are those students who try really hard and receive no special rewards. Why should top students receive all the credit. I went to an assembly once where the school ackowledged only half the school with certificates and lots of children missed out. This year at our school the new principal will acknowledge all the students in their final year at primary school with a few words of their achievement which I think is great and fair to all.

No. Their reward is that they will get into a better college and hopefully a scholarship to pay for it. They should want to do well and should feel good about it. I look at it as a bribe to get students to do their work in school. Sorry. But I expect my children to do their best and what I know they are capable of doing. Especially since they have always gotten these grades. They understand what they will need to get into college. They are not stupid. Once school work is done, they have the free time to spend with their friends so they don't miss out on any of those things.

If you take a child that has always struggled and is getting there now, maybe but not money.

My kids know that we expect them to do their very best on everything in life, including their school work. We also believe a little incentive can never hurt. This is the system that my husband came up with when they were in elementary, they are in 9th and 12th grade now.

Straight A's = $10
OR
Per A = $1
Per B = .50
Per C = .25
Per D = nothing
Per F = they have to pay us

This has worked quite well for our kids and they haven't gotten below a B on a report card in years!

I personally think so. Whenever I did well on papers or exams, the teachers often gave encouraging and great comments; that made me more eager to do well on the next one. Their comments were rewards to me, but if they were to reward me with other things, I would definitely like that, too. =D

I believe kid should get something. I never get anything but going out to eat. Its a goo thing that I motivate myself because going out to dinner does NOT motivate me. Money is a great reward. I know I'm a kid.

Yes they should. Rewards should be given for good grades and punishments should be given for bad grades.

No. In my house, that was expected, not rewarded.

of course not. good grades should be expected. they are pretty easy to get for the vast majority of courses as long as you study just a little. classes are designed so any idiot can make a "c". it is one of the issues with our public school system.
