I experience this problem with some of my friends from Live. I'll get into a game with them and won't be able to hear them at all. Sometimes I hear them when I first enter a room but then I won't hear them again. Try pulling the headset plug out and plugging it back in. If that doesn't work, maybe you should try closing the room you are in and creating/joining a new one. You could also try to restart your 360. I haven't been able to come up with a definite cause for this problem, but I am leaning towards the connection to the network for one or both of the players.

Try wiggling the connection of the headset, If that does not work then you might have a poor connection for your game and sound always goes before vision.

it could be:
A- one of the mics is bad so it does not work.
b- because if you are in gears of war then there is a glitch so that after a room fills up and if some one leaves you cannot hear this new person
C- because if you said that yo were under 18 you need to go to the settings and change them. there are parrental settings that do not allow you to talk. samething goes for friend requests

make sure the volume on the headset is up and also on the xbox. Go to your player options (hit the X botton) and make sure the mic volume is up.
Or if by chance you are on Gears of War that is a bug.

Maybe you are too far apart, check the instruction booklet to see the maximum you are allowed to go.
