Capacity of external harddrive can go very huge (500GB).
Flash drive got it limitation but smaller in size.
If the storage of your son is to keep files less than 4GB, you can ops for Flash drive.
However, I suspect he need alot more for song or similar stuff.

The external hard drive would be the best option, the flash drives out in the stores today are great, but you will never be able to get close to the capacity of a hard drive with a flash drive, space for the money you have to go for the external hard drive, if he only wants a few gigs of space go for the flash drive, but you mentioned he asked for a hard d rive so to me he wants alot of space so i would suggest the external hard drive. i hope this helps you, good luck

An external hard drive would be the best option if he needs more storage space or a backup drive, a flash drive would be a better option if he needs to take it with him and use it on multiple computers, flash drives do not hold as much as external hard drives do.

For really low volume data storage1 to 2 gigs flash is cheap and fast. However the economy disappears for storage of more than 2 gigs. Then a full external hard drive is best.
If you have an old hard drive lying around you can but a external hard drive case and slide your old drive into it and just plug into your USB port.

I used this method - I took my old hard drive out or my computer and purchased a larger one and used the one from my computer as the external in a USB case.

External HD for a laptop is nice. I prefer 2.5" drives for externals on laptops because they can be powered by the USB. Flash drives are also nice but don't have as much storage space as an external. If you can swinig it get both but if not I'd recommend buying a 2.5" drive with an enclosure for it.

It depends how much information he wants to put on it. Flash drives only go up to 2 - 4GB without getting too out of control price-wise. External hard drives are MUCH larger, but they are much bigger, too. It depends if your son is going to be carrying it everywhere (in which case I suggest a flash drive), or if it will stay stationary usually and only sometimes move (external hard drive).

It depends on the amount of data he wants to store. The only restriction is the capacity of the flash drive. Most cost effective one is up to 2 gb which will not hold a DVD movie but will store a lot of other files.

Flash drives are more accessable, but have less space. Hard drives have a better rotational speed and hold more. You'll have to weight it out.

an external hard drive will have much more storage than a flash...flash will typically have 256MB up to 5 GB a hard disk typically will have 20-100 GB...the hard disk is more expensive and have a bigger size...so it really depends on how much storage he needs.

Flash drives are costlier than the ext HDD. if he requires too much memory to store data (say above 10GB) it is better he goes for ext HDD. if it less like (1 or 2 GB) he can opt for Flash drive.
