That is called the blue screen of death,
or BSOD
Try this. When booting press the F8 key many times thei should bring up a boot menu.
Boot in safe mode.
then when in safe mode try a virus scan or better yet rip off the last piece of software you installed. or driver for a piece of hardware. If you have the recoveryfunction enabled you may be able to access it from the safe menu
Good luck.
As the only other remedy is get the restore software CD out...You did save that didn't you....

This sounds like one of two things.

It could be a virus - try running a Norton or Macaffee programme on it to see if that clears it up. Will it let you start in Safe Mode to debug? Might be worth calling the manufacturer.

Otherwise it may be that there is something wrong in your BIOS setup, which you should be able to enter by pressing F2 (that may differ from laptop to laptop) and have a look at it.

It's very simple but is pretty much the computer's cerebellum! It controls the basics like the computer's internal clock, and what sort of security settings you're running. People tend to forget about this part now as most of these functions can be controlled via Windows or your operating system.

Try this website - it explains BIOS and what to do with it in more detail - but make sure you rememebr what you've changed as it'll be fundamental to the system.

Restart in Safe Mode (Hold down F8 Key while you boot), and do a system restore to an earlier date. System Restore is START>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. The Blue Screen of Death is usually caused by something you recently installed that is incompatible with the system. System Restore should roll your system back to an earlier time before you installed whatever is causing the BSOD. Safe Mode will allow the laptop to start without loading anything but the minimum in the way of drivers.
