Well have a year old computer that is fast and is ok but the last month or so it made alot of noise and sounded like the hardrive cooling fan was making bad noises.
I
n the last 2 weeks the noise has gone, my guess is the fan has stopped working, however now after the computer has been on for about an hour or 2 it freezes up and then shutsdown. If u play a game or make it work harder and do all the same things it used to do fine in the past it only seems to last about 10 or 20minutes. Could my computer be overheating? or is is something else?

If it is overheating could this do damage to the hardrive?

You probably don't have a hard drive fan...that was probably your processor fan. I suggest looking to see if it is working or not, and if it is not, replace it ASAP! If your processor is not properly cooled, it can be ruined forever by heat. Try not to use your computer much (not at all would be ideal) until the problem is fixed.

Your computer has two fans. The main fan (& power source) you should be able to see from the back. It's what cools the whole system. If that fan isn't working you could burn out a lot of things. The fan on the processor chip is the second fan. If it were to stop the chip over heating would cause the pc to shut down. Either way you should stop using it OR open the case and place a fan on it. If you see it's the processor chip I would replace it before using the computer and "any" length of time. They're not that hard to replace.

If the fan of the processor is not working, i dont think it would last an hour.
The fan must be working, but i guess there's alot of dust on the Heat Sink , it happened to me .. all you have to do is remove the fan , clean the heat sink and put it back ...

you may want to leave it to a professional to do it , or get your hand dirty and learn.

Otherwise,
The hard drive has no fan.
So I think it's the hard drive itself ... open the case and listen to the hard drive, if you hear a sound from it before the shutdown , then it must be it.

I suggest you backup whatever important you have on the hard drive in this hour you have before it goes Down for good.

Power Supply cooling fan. The hard drive fan would shut it down faster than one hour, plus it wouldn't run fast before it shut down. The power supply fan is out if you can't feel air coming out the fan on the back of your computer. Usually you have to replace the entire power supply, but it's only a $30 or $50 part in most cases.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
