We had a pay-as-you-go cell phone that we used for the longest time but then got a new cell phone. We gave the pay-as-you-go to a friend of ours who is using it to this day. She pays for the cards when she wants to talk and it is unlimited calling in time.

If you have a phone that you want to get rid of - just give it to her. We avoided any administration fee by not telling the phone company we switched.

Find out if shes eligible for an upgrade, I bought my mom a new phone for Christmas, she was due for an upgrade so we paid the difference. If she's not try ebay, just make sure you get a good seller and the phone works with her provider.
