It's probably safer than meeting someone in a bar.
You get the chance to have long "chats" with them, talk to them about their interests, families, their history, preferences, etc.
And when you do meet, it's usually for coffee with no real expectations aside from having coffee and maybe meeting a new friend. If it looks, at that point, like there's something there worth pursuing... then you can opt for that.

The word 'safe' there is quite relative. We cannot guarantee that dating outside the net will be safer.
This is my view. Love or feeling like toward a person can happen anywhere, anytime, through anything, it likes. Including through internet. Most of the time, the romance in the net refers to a long distance connection or relationship. This distance can be different cities, states, or even countries.
Long distance relationship is okay as long as you will not do it forever. It cannot be done in a long period. At some time, one of you got to move in order to get close to the other.
It also okay to meet someone over the net and let our feeling grow. But relationship in any kind requires trust. If you have a long distance relationship then you need an extra energy and time to build the trust. Don't rush, take the time, because time will truly tell.
According to my own experience, I don't give any contact details (phone numbers, real address) before I really know the person. Then cellphone number will be enough to start giving the contact details for more.

At first I thought it was a bunch of weirdos on there, judging by this whacked out dude I used to work with who use it all the time. But then I tried it and at first I didn't care a whole lot for it. But after a while I realized the women on there are looking for the same thing we are. I just started dating a woman I met on-line and she is such a terrific person. It's just like meeting a woman in person. Treat them with respect.

In most cases it isn't safer or unsafer than any other
dating with people you don't know. Media is highly
exaggerating the problem. There is a problem. But
that's a general problem with meeting someone you
don't know. It has nothing to do where you first met
that person. Unless of course you met in "one of those
places". But then again. You'd have to find the matching
real world example to match the risk.

I met my girlfriend on the internet, we met in a public place and there were no shocks because i'd known her for two years. webcams, microphones, etc. She was the same person in real life as online but my point is, if you do it correctly it's fine.
Careful though, people aren't always who they say they are

I think it's equally as safe as other types of dating. unless you are meeting someone through a mutual friend, you don't really know who you are dating until you get to know them. I think it's a fantastic way to meet people who you might otherwise never meet.

I met my husband online 6 years ago ( I was in New England and we was in Michigan). We spoke online and on the phone for 6 months before we met face to face (we had exchanged pics). It was a fabulous experience that I would recommend to anyone.

Its same like dating in real, only you can't see and touch the person with whom your dating. do you know how your datter looks? If you know, how can you be sure its not someone else in your datters place. Think about it.
