A lot was down to the sort of abuse that's starting to appear on here, another reason was that it was being used for illegal purposes.

The model was different; Google had a selected band of screened 'experts' who would get the first opportunity to answer questions, in return for a fee. The fee for asking a question could be anywhere from $2 to $20. Essentially you were paying for research; the theory was, that since the selected answerers were getting paid, they would actually go to the trouble of *really* searching for you. Towards the end, the payment to answers became contingent on the feedback of the questioner, and various other things that made people stop wanting to answer.

On the whole, given that Google tends to give away a lot for free, it was slightly weird that they were charging for what was, in essence, a glorified message board. The rationale would be that a fee per question would cut down on the amount of dross that was asked ("Wen is teh n3xt Hary P0tter cuming out????!"), and more towards people with real problems. In the end, the payout for answering just wasn't worth the effort, it seems. Google thought that the programme had run its course, especially when compared against free services such as the MSN one, and Y!A. It was one of their failed experiments at charging for a service.

Yahoo and Google are not part of each other, they are competitors for the same activities. Google's answers just weren't as well known and there was some charge involved, I believe. Google decided to close it and go on to other things.

Yahoo and Google are NOT buddies - they are rivals... otherwise they would merge into one to save resources. Yahoo and BT are buddies tho so watchout !! ;O)
