Colin Powell spoke up yesterday urging an immediate build up in armed forces. Is there a clear and present danger to the U.S?
The lessons of WWII and the cold war shows that the world cannot be conquered as long as the economic might of the U.S. exist.
Solution to this: Crash the U.S. economy beforehand.
The events of 9/11 was a failed attempt to do just that. The attack on the World Trade Center was an attempt to upset the world currency market, which could cripple capitalism on a global scale. It's likely this failed attempt will not be the last.
We are facing an enemy that has tapped into a global population of 1 billion people to raise its army. Under the guise of religious tenet, they have been training their army for decades. If this group is successful, they have the potential of raising an army of 50 million strong.
Is Powell right? Is our current active duty troop levels of 500,000 enough to stop this rising tide?

I agree wholeheartedly. Our first and foremost obligation is protecting our people. We need a strong militay to do that. The stronger, the better.

What terrorists there are out there against us is very scary, but it's also very realistic. We need to always be on guard and we need to always be prepared. If we consider ourselves a world power, then we need to be able to protect ourselves from any and all other world powers or combination thereof that might exist.

The 9/11 terrorists shocked America. We can't let our guard down and let it happen again.

In a capitalist society the need for soldiers it seems would indicate that a pay increase would be needed in order to secure the means to wage a battle . If pay increased so would enlistment .A life is worth more then 20,000 per year .
The cost of good government increases during times of financial wars waged for corporate profits and political power .
Increase the wage of the working soldier and you will have all you need .
This is the beginning of a police state and a capitalist take-over of the world with mercenary's for hire .
Americans of all walks of life will not support this war and the needed troops will never be drafted . A draft would mean the end to this war so to continue it Bush would have to increase the entrance pay to military personnel .Or force the country into a depression .

It has become apparent that we do need to increase our troop levels, based on this type of war / occupation / nationbuilding that we are currently doing.

The reduction in troops was part of the concept that since we were no longer looking at a 2-front war against enemies with real armies, that troop levels could be heavily reduced and that technology could be used as force-multipliers as necessary.

But an occupation to the level needed in Iraq requires boots on the ground, and lots of them.

So, yes, the troop levels need to grow until the Iraqi government figures out that to be a legitimate government, it must have a monopoly on military force within its borders. And it must get tough and make the tough decisions to put down any attempt to undermine this monopoly, whether a Sunni Saddamite (Sodomite) or a supporter like al Sadr.
