I don't know much, if anything about cars. My problem is thus: I own a 1999 Hyundai Tiburon. It's the most stripped down version of the car available. Soon after the automatic transmission was replaced with a rebuilt one the car started to sort of stutter or hiccup when you first pressed down on the accelerator at a green light. We drove it like that for some time and it got progressively worse, to the point where sometimes it would only idle forward at first. We'd press down hard on the accelerator and it would go slow and then speed up suddenly and forcefully.

All of a sudden the car got incredbly worse. It now hardly accelerates at all and we have to ease very very very gently on pedal with bated breath just to get it to go. It also will not shift into fourth gear at all. When the engine is running while in drive or reverse and not moving, you can feel it 'hiccuping' repeatedly. When it's in P it does not do that.

What could be the problem? Anyone??

change your fuel filter, if that doesnt work ,.,hook it up to code reader at your local parts store , they will read it for free and point you in the right direction , if in fact it turns out to be the fuel filter causing the problem you can expect fuel delivery problems in the future because of added strain on fuel pump when the fuel filter is clogged.

it sounds like you have a transmission problem. The transmission may be stuck in limp mode,( meaning the computer will start car off in 2nd gear, not first.) Which would give your sluggish acceleration. You've probably burned up you overdrive clutches driving it this way and you will probably need an transmission overhaul. I'd have the codes checked in the computer the verify. If numerous transmission codes are present, then I can almost guarantee that you may have started off with something as simple as a shift solenoid problem, but with the extended driving under those situations caused more extensive damage. Sorry for the bad news!
