what makes backgammon a suitable game? I'm afraid that if i buy them a game they won't play it, i guess any game i bought would have to be fairly simple and not too many rules and fun to. Is backgammon like this?

i am in my eighties and learned to play backgammon many years ago. but i wouldn't like to have to learn it now. it's quite demanding. i would suggest buying them a board game that reminds them of the old days, something like monopoly. but if they like croswwords and that sort of thing, scrabble can be great fun as well.

Folks in their 80's usually have more of everything (except money) than they need. Knowing that they have a place in your thoughts means the wold to them. Here are a couple of ways to do that.
Have each of their decendants get a professional photo done--by family group. (Penney's and Wal-Mark offer inexpensive photo service promos--as long as you don't buy their packages), put it in a frame (don't make them have to go buy frames!). Date the picture and write the names of each person in the picture on the front (there are special pens for this). You'll probably want a copy for yourself. An annual photo is a nice a tradition.
My 80+ mother likes the old classic movies--musicals and the "feel good" stories but needed a basic SIMPLE-to-operate DVD player--installed! Perhaps chipping in for a DVD player would be a good choice. Then let every one in the family know to send a movie on DVD. That should make a nice library.
If you decide on a gift card make it one to a 'superstore' one that sells groceries, does oil changes, and has a pharmacy. These can be very much appreciated by anyone on a fix income who probably already have more neckties than they need.
Just knowing that you care enough to ask about this should warm their hearts!
Merry Christmas, Cee Cee

A lot of supreme ideas already mentioned I was thinking of cheese, biscuits, and such. Food always seems appreciated by the elderly in our circle. And yes, alcohol and speciality teas.
Depending on the persons, movies, music, perfumes, toiletries, even clothes. Ladies especially seem to like comfortable things for home and sleep.
Of course, you could always ask one about what the other might like.
The main thing, don't stress and be a little creative...

The game Mr & Mrs is good fun but obviously they need to have other couples around. A nice family photo in a frame always goes down well. A family get together.

Cross words or puzzles are good to exercise the brain.
Maybe something like backgammon would suit them better?

How about a snack they enjoy or a movie from "back in the day" when they were young? Or if they like listening to music, a cd of one of their favorite performers from from their earlier years.
You could also volunteer your time by taking them out to see or do something they might not; like a live show even the circus!
Merry Christmas!

When I visit my grandparents, I always get my grandma good perfume. She is counting on it evry year and this is my 'thing' with her. My grandpa is a little harder to please. I usually get him a CD of something from the 50's 60's or a musical. This is after I already got him a CD player years ago.

You could always buy them a shawl, they should appreciate stuff like that! Board games may be OK too- ask your parents what they remember them enjoying.

If they enjoy old movies...or any movies why not a membership to Blockbuster Online or Netflix?
Saves them from going to the video store and lets them pick their movies.
