If you work in the fast food industry long enough, you'll find out why. I used to flip burgers, and from what I saw, just because the restaurant has rules and regulations, you'll find that a great many of your co-workers don't follow them (at least, this was my experience).
This is the primary reason I DON'T eat fast food any more.

Because so many people EAT in fast food restaurants. That's not meant to be a smart-*ss answer, but consider that if 1/100 of 1% of people eating in any place were to get sick, and it were a mom-and-pop place that had 100 customers a day, odds are that one person would get sick every three months or so.
But, in the case of a chain that serves ten million people a day, 1/100th of 1%, you are looking at 1,000 per day getting sick.
You never hear about the ones that didn't get sick.

The reason why may not be the restaurants at all.
The farms are excepting sewage sludge to be put onto their vegetable fields!
This has been going on a long while now. People gotta stand up about this and do something, like contact the government, they're are so many numbers and websites.
Even if you email Counsil people in you're locality you will be amazed how they will email you back.
If they deny it, unless it is really not happening in you're locality, do not believe them.
When you make you're own food at home, use food grown locally from a farm that does not accept sewage sludge.
We have one, and the farmer is big in government now, and doing everything he can to stop this nonsense.

In the news, there has been reports of food poisoning at some Taco Bell and now Olive Garden. One of the main reason is the contamination of some of the food, for example the e. coli found in the lettuce, at least what I heard. Another reason could be the handling of the food, no gloves or never washed the hands.
I saw a report where a restaurant's food had fecal matter detected because employees never washed their hands.

I think the main reason is that the people preparing the food is high school students. I worked at a Wendy's while I was in high school and college. They taught us what order the condiments went on each sandwich but taught us nothing about food safety. As a matter of fact, I was using a 5 gallon bucket of pickles as a stepping stool once and the lid broke and I fell into the pickles. I went in shoes and all. I told the manager and he said the customers won't know so go ahead and put them on the condiment line.
So we were not taught about how long to cook a burger or anything of that nature. Also they don't go with the highest quality of food so you are starting at a disadvantage to begin with.

Because the agriculture business hires illegal aliens who may have serious health problems to harvest the produce.
Also they provide poor or no toilet facilites for the pickers so guess where they end up going. That's right on the lettuce that will make up your future taco.

the food is low quality and served in a fashion that pays little attention to food safety.

Um... because the food isn't packaged properly, workers spit, piss, sneeze and rub their bodies on the food, slaughter houses ignore safety standards, it isn't healthy to begin with, the food is usually past their date, &c.
Does this look healthy to eat?
