Visit a nursing home. Many of those people don't have family anymore, and would love to have some company this time (or any time) of year.

You could start by being nice to people that you pass as you go about your shopping, going to church, anywhere you see people. You will never know when you give someone a smille, say, hi, or how are you today? how much it means to them. The person that you think least needs it, may be someone who is aching and breaking inside but doesn't show it on the outside. One kind word or gesture may give them the biggest lift in the world. Sometimes if you see someone trying to find something and seem to be having difficulty; ask them if you can help them. "Is there something that I can help you find? Sometimes two sets of eyes are better than one." You may get up a conversation with someone in the store and find out that they could use your help, or your opinion, or suggestion. It makes you feel so good when you do what you can, and go on your way. As you walk away, you could say a little prayer to yourself for God to help them too. These things we can do all year.

Buy a couple boxes of candy canes and pass them out to people you see and walk by. It's not about the candy cane (I actually haven't seen anyone actually eat one in years), but it's about the sentiment. Hand them a candy cane and wish them a happy holiday season. Chances are it'll make them stop and think just a moment and smile. It could turn their whole day around. And maybe then they'll do someone nice for someone else.

Surpise them with a gift basket of common random goodies. Cookies, some books, old movies, xmas trinkets, and a good ole jolly hug.

You might give an hour or two of your time talking with people in a retirement home. There's alot of lonely people who would love to have you there.
