This is normal activity for a fish that is being picked on. You don't mention what other fish you have in the tank, but I'll venture a guess that someone in the tank is badgering the new betta.

Watch the tank carefully and see what is going on with the fish. If you find that someone is badgering the new betta you'll have to make some changes. This could be as simply as more hiding spaces, or you may need to return one of the fish to the store.

Another possibility is that your tank water isn't up to par. If there are high nitrates in a tank it's possible that the fish in the tank have acclimated to the higher nitrates, but a new comer would not be able to acclimate that quickly and would be listless.

Just because they're named "fighting fish" doesn't mean they'll be out and about. Give the fish time to know the tank. You just changed it's whole world. It'll be a little afraid for awhile.

New fish may not eat for a couple of days until the fish realize that it's an OK place to live. After a couple of days, it'll be swimming around the tank. Although, just like people, some fish will always be a little afraid or shy.

He might just be exploring his new tank. Betta (fighting fish) are actually pretty docile to other fish, and they are really lazy. They lay around on rocks all the time. The only time I've really ever seen one try to fight another fish is with his own reflection or another male betta. Mine lives in a tank with mollies, platies, gouramis, and a few other types and he never fights. He sometimes tries showing off to my female balloon mollies, who are uninterested. lol

Just make sure he is eating, otherwise, maybe he is sick. if he is sick, take him out of the tank so he doesnt get any other fish ill. goto:

good luck with your betta, and the rest of your tank. <><

If you mean a Siamese fighting fish you need to do some quick adjustments.

The Beta cannot be placed in a tank with other fish unless he's in an isolated part of the tank. By isolated I mean partitioned off or in a small side tank by himself.

They always seem listless until they kill another fish.

particular they are tropical fish. they might desire to be stored between seventy six-eighty two F in any respect situations. maximum individuals declare their Betta is sluggish and not moving around alot. that's led to by using water it is merely too chilly for them. i'm helpful he will love his new abode!

Bettas (Siamese Fighting Fish) can be shy like that when you put them in a community tank. They are either too shy, too aggressive, or normal. I would suggest getting him out RIGHT AWAY, because if he is acting like that, he doesn't like the community tank and will actually die if you don't get him out. Put him in a one gallon bowl or bigger alone.

It depends on what is in your tank, and conditions of your tank, also on the heath of the fish purchased.
