It use to be upgrade every 3-5 years. Now with the advancement in technology and computers coming with the options to upgrade/ update out of the box.

The questions to ask is does your computer perofom to your needs? Does it keep up with newer software titles and hardware on the market today?

Sometimes it is more economical to upgrade and update componants of your PC. Some easy updates and upgrades are RAM size, hard drive size and sound and video cards.

However, if your mother board is out of date and cannot support larger RAM size and better performing sound and video cards than you may find yourself having to make the leap for total upgrade.

If your processor is slow and lagging for your wants and needs than you may have to weigh the option to replace processor only or make the total upgrade. The cost comparison can be very close and many just make the total upgrade.

It seems like these days computers are needing updates every six months. Make sure your ram is updated, your processing speed, hard drive and things of this nature. Sometimes it costs more to update than to actually buy a new computer. Look at all your options first before buying a new computer.

That depends so much on what you need the computer for! If you're doing a lot of graphics stuff or if you're heavily into gaming, you'll probably want the latest hardware. On the other end of the spectrum, my mom, who uses her only for email, a few websites and sometimes MS Word, has a computer that's about five years old and it works fine.

The company I work for takes a 3-year warrantee on computers. When the warrantee is up, they decomission the computer and replace it. It seems to work out about right.
