The greatest tsunami ever (December 2004). It killed over 200,000 people in my country only. I only had a family-relative living there, and thank God they were okay. My ex boss whose wife was originally from that area lost over 100 relatives within seconds. Four regions along the coast became an empty land, without even a tree left. Two island were wasped away from the map for good.
TV stations all over the country were airing the news about it and anything connecting with it all day long for one month. The sadness, deep sadness was felt by every single person in this country. I personally couldn't stop crying especially when I saw how that giant wave running over the people who were so panic and didn't have any idea what was going on (taped by a can-did camera and a pro cameraman who was getting the news about the earthquake few hours before) and how the heavy equipments grabbed the dead bodies and put in the huge mass grave, it seemed they were only trash.

The lifting of the quotas for skilled technical workers just prior to 2000 by President Clinton. This allowed a heavy influx of Indian, Chinese, and Russian engineers to help the United States do Y2K work very cleanly and with very minor glitches. These Indian, Chinese and Russian engineers then sub-contracted the work to their own countrymen at a very low rate. This rapidly led to the outsourcing of skilled programming to China and India. This snowballed into call centers being answered in those countries. Now we are beginning to see major elective surgery performed in those countries. We are fairly rapidly going from the world's leader to being a farm for those countries. We are paying for Iraq by loans from China.

I was going to say either 9/11 or the fall of the Soviet Union, but I was beaten to it. So, I'' have to say the end of the Viet Nam war, and the beginning of America's foreign policy troubles.
