many people bring in things from home and decorate their desks with all sorts. I'm sitting at someone's desk (I'm a temp) and I can see 4 pictures of cats, a 'special mum' ornament, photos of the entire family and other fluffy toys. I just can't bring myself to feel at home at work at all. My desk would be so boring and plain as anything. Does anyone else feel like this, or do you in fact like a little taste of home at work?

well, ... surely we have to enjoy what we do in life.
People do that to keep a positive spirit, mood, ambience, relax, etc so that they can perform best. even thou it's no so necessary to have te kinda stuffs but it proven it carries favour you some on whipping a boring work place to be your so called "NICE homey ambience kinda place"

I believe everyone on earth will agree HOME is where you feel most sanctuary place. maybe to give a touch of ...anything you like without disturbing others.

You're playing both sides of the fence! Your question asks why people make themselves comfortable at work and then you follow it by wishing that you could do the same thing! If you're allowed to have pictures and little personal nick-knacks on your desk, why don't you just do it and personalize your work space?

Whenever I worked, temporary or full-time, I always had a picture of my son, cartoons, odds and sods. I did it because I was there every weekday; for about 8-9 hours, plus commuting - that's at least 1/3 of the 24-hour-day.

I know how you feel, I am also a temp, but with my own desk, but I do not feel it is right to fill your desk with tacky cr#p, this is work not home and this stuff should be left at home, maybe a photo off loved ones and a comedy mug but that should be it.

basically they don't know how to strike up a conversation so they have items that they can talk about slapped around their desk like the desk your at now - she's a mum likes cats and fluffy toys! wants to re-live her youth - she's shouting ask me about my life - personally i like to have pictures of cakes that i intend to eat and bin them when that task is completed
