and even if you only want a loaf of bread you have to drive to the nearest wal-mart?

depends on the size of the city. my mom lives in the country, and they have a bakery, a butcher, a candy shop, a book store...all individual, quaint little shops.

gas stations have convenience stores attached where you can buy quick things like milk or bread or chips for 3X the normal price.

but in the larger cities, "corner shops" are few and far between. a trip to the grocery store for some small thing is considered overkill even to us who are used to it.

No, not at all, yet the amount of them depends on where you live, if you are referring to quick marts, they are all over, you can get a loaf of bread from almost any gas station. As far as mom & pop type of specialty shops, all over the cities, I live in chicago, and within 2 blocks of me are several bakers, a very good butcher, and tons of other specialty shops. Also have several White hens, which are mini grocery stores, in essence. Also, in diferent areas, you have a different mix, in the north part of the city is the Indian/paki area, tons and tons of small stores, same with chinatown, and the hispanic areas, the amount varies with which neighborhood culture you are in.I am on the west side of the downtown area, so the shops around me are more finer bakeries and etc, you go further to the loop and you have supermarkets in buildings and a lot less corner shops, however, you quick marts will always be right around the corner.

Now, if you leave the city and go to the suburbs, you are dealing mostly with super markets, yet it varies on the area, some smaller towns have a ton of small corner shops, others don't.

Also, not all Americans are Wal-Mart hags, the store is opposed by a lot of people, and in the City of Chicago, Wal-Mart has been banned completely, due to it's ability to put local corner shops out of business, lower wages and turn a neighborhood into scum real fast.

Anyways, as with any large country, people are on the go, and would rather go to one place that has everything, rather than going from shop to shop to find what they are looking for.

Oh, and in large cities, cars are not a necessity, public transportation is great, the smaller cirites are where you can only survive with a car.

No, that isn't true. Not by a long shot. In Chicago, and we just got our first Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart is big. It's really big. In fact, it is the largest private employer in the U.S., with over 900,000 employees as of 2 years ago. I don't even know how many they have now. Although you can find a lot at Wal-Mart, there isn't a lot of selection there. We still have corner shops and grocery stores.

Depends on where you live, here in Pittsburgh, PA there are corner shops like on every other corner and people shop at them all the time rather than always hopping in car and going to a grocery store or walmart for a small item.

No that is not true. We have convenience stores and Gas Stations that carry the basics. Granted you may have to drive depending on where you live. I live in a biggish city and the are 2 stores within walking distance and 1 gas station. In a pinch I can walk. Walmart is not the answer for groceries. I would rather go to a supermarket which is 2 miles down the street. In a way, I can see your side. Here in America, the car is a must have. We are dependent on it.

This is not true. Even in towns with Walmart, etc there are corner shops.

Majority of us (outside a large metropolitian area like Chicago, New York, LA, etc) still have to drive to the store to buy bread but we don't have to go to a "big box" store to do it.

Depends whereabouts you go.
There are "convenience stores" in the states. Usually these are on a high street, sometimes on a corner. So they do have corner shops in the states. Also, petrol stations sell pretty much everything you'd find in a normal corner shop.
