You know.. when you've been drinking the night before and are abit rough feeling and someone says.. 'Have a hair of the dog, that'll sort you out' ... as in to have another alcoholic drink to sort you out... but why is it 'hair of the dog'
... whats dog hairs got to do with it??

The previous answer is exactly right. The saying comes from an old belief that a cure for dog bite was a potion that included "a hair of the dog that bit you." Gross, I hope it was applied as a poultice and not as something you had to drink.... Anyway, so if booze made you sick, a LITTLE booze might make you better. It's a hair of the dog, not a whole other dog!

It's short for "The Hair of the Dog that Bit you". In other words the cause of the problem.

i'm guessing it's called that because that's about what it feels like when you're trying to force it down
