In the US and many English speaking countries:
1 billion = 1,000 million.
In the rest of the world (and in most English speaking countries before 1990), 1 billion = 1 million million (the origin of the word billion = million raised to power two).
The practice of using the short billion began in the USA. It has recently spread to other English speaking countries.
classical:
10^6 = million
10^9 = milliard
10^12 = billion (million^2)
10^18 = trillion (million^3)
10^24 = quadrillion (million^4)
Thus, from the name, one can find the value with a simple operation. e.g., an octillion is million^8 = (10^6)^8 = 10^48
(1 followed by 48 zeroes)
USA version
10^6 = million

However in a large part of the world the word billion is used for a million million (so 1.000.000²).
