Edward Van Halen is fast but I would have to say that Yngvie Malmsteen is the fastest. Thier playing/music styles are a little different from eachother. If you have never heard of him before you might want to check him out.

Eddie and Stevie are great but they wouldn't sound the same without distortion. the old school guys had to use the pick on every note. like surf guitarist Dick Dale who was rumored to melt picks. Chet Adkins used to play rhythm, bass and lead at the same time. it is hard to compare they are all great.
many bluegrass and flamenco players put these pop guys to shame.
