By City of London, I mean the administrative boundary for the Corporation of London - the "square mile".

Kings Road, Edgware Road etc are outside this area. When City Road goes into the City of London, its name changes to Finsbury Pavement.

Road is a relatively new name in itself and means 'where a horse might travel' Traditionally it was 'Lane' or 'Way' Must be lots of old streets in London - hence few Roads

Try HISTORY! hehe in 1910 London became one of the first citys in the world to get a name of a so called street/lane/road/etc... BUT name wasnt used untill the 1930s and by this time many roads had the name steet, lane, etc... and not untill after the war in 1945 there was a lot of construction that they started to use the name road more often! you will find some but not many.

Hope this helped.

Because a "road" implies a long expanse and there aren't any within the City of London.
