They want to track where their customers come from. Also, with your phone number they can sometimes get your address and you will begin to receive flyers from them. They may also begin to call you with offers and promotions. Personally, I never give them my phone number. Today too many people have our information and it is so easy for it to fall into the wrong hands.

They plot the information in a computer program, so they can see where the people travel from, to shop there. They can also estimate the social standing of their customer base, their economic status and whatnot. They never call you! Or in my experience, no one has ever called. It is a basic marketing tool. If you know what sort of shoppers are coming into your store, and where they are travelling from, you can use different marketing and advertising techniques to draw from other cross sections of the community. They are just trying to find out how to serve you better. You can decline to participate. And, you can give them the wrong number. Giving them the wrong number, however, although convenient to you, means that the data they are collecting is inaccurate. They just want to serve the community better, and hence, make more money!! Wouldnt we all!

It is probably just for tracking purposes. It helps them keep track of who is a repeat customer and allows them to offer customized services. It could be for junk mail and telemarketing purposes as well. If this makes you uncomfortable I would ask the reason. Different stores may use the information in different ways.

some businesses categorizes customers by phone number instead of alphabetical. so whenever calling they'll find you instantly.
