why the double standard?

if a female sleeps with lots of men she is a slag
if a male sleeps with lot of women he is given a pat on the back

can anyone explain why this is?

I cannot adequately answer your question except to say that we live in a paternalisitc society and female chastity has been and always will be valued. It goes back to the fact that a man can sleep with many women and have no idea who he impregnates but a woman always knows who her child is. Fatherhood is at best a guess but Motherhood is a fact. That bothers men and they will always seek to find a way around it. If they can control and limit who the woman has sex with then they can, to some extent control who she procreates with.
It is not by any means fair and I would have no interest in a man who "slept around" any more than I would a woman who had such loose morals. I do not want a man who has such low standards that he will be with anything that will hold still long enough, that is not much of a compliment. I imagine that men feel the same way about a woman who has been with just anyone and has no moral standards.
I think that the old morality is changing. I hope so. A man who sleeps around is just as disgusting as a woman who does the same thing.

Because women have babies!,,,what I mean by this is the one thing women are 100% certain about is they are the mother of that child, for the father however there can be an element of doubt. If they see a girl sleeping around with lots of guys I think subconciously they have trouble trusting them and would rather have a 'good' girl whom they think they can trust when it comes to relationships.
I'm not saying this is rational or right just that it's a subconcious feeling men get, if they just want a woman for sex there quite happy to do that because there's no intention of being a father (or so they hope) but that feeling is still deep rooted in their minds.
I think a guy who sleeps around is patted on the back for the simple reason other guys know how hard it can be sometimes to get girls into bed so they admire his ability to get these girls, most girls however could walk into any nightclub ask the first guy she sees to sleep with her and rarely get turned down.

I disagree. I don't think there is a double standard. If you don't think fornication is cool, then your not giving either the female or the male a pat on the back. If you do think its cool you are giving each other pats on the back after all it takes two to tango. I also think that the assumption started at a time when it was very taboo to be sleeping around, and for example you would have the "school ****" who would be passed around amongst the the guys.

Because men like to think they are the only ones who've ever been there. Also, there are so many stereotypes surrounding women its not even worth going through them all.....I think the term "frigid" still exists. Try to think about it from the point of view of a woman who dosent want to have sex. Men will think that there is no point in talking to her, once their hear of her decision, its true! Verry nice, it seems we cant win.
Also, I blame society as much as men, if not more. Most men dont want to hold crap, inferior and sexist views, but society encourages them to.

In my country, if a female sleeps with a lot of men she is a prostitute, either paid with money or paid with gifts.

There is no double standard in the bible, nat. Immorality is immorality. In the bible it says, let us set our sights on things that are not in this world and not on things that are of this world. Because the things that are in this world are only temporary. Isn't that wonderful, nat? So the double standards of this world are only temporary!
