Sales would be actually making the sale of a product.
Marketing a product is advertising it; letting people know you have something FOR sale.

marketing is the process of selling your product while sales is the end product of marketing.... To elaborate more: Marketing is the process by which companies determine what products or services may be of interest to customers, and the strategy to use in sales, communications and business development. It is an integrated process through which companies create value for customers and build strong customer relationships in order to capture value from customers in return. while A sale is the pinnacle activity involved in selling products or services in return for money or other compensation. It is an act of completion of a commercial activity. It starts with consent (or agreement) to an acquisition or appropriation or request followed by the passing of title (property or ownership) in the item and the application and due settlement of a price, the douche of or any claim upon the item. The purchaser, though a party to the sale, does not execute the sale, only the seller does that. To be precise the sale completes prior to the payment and gives rise to the obligation of payment. If the seller completes the first two above stages (consent and passing ownership) of the sale prior to settlement of the price, the sale is still valid and gives rise to an obligation to pay.

There is more than one answer. The one I like is that
The Marketing department's job is to generate high quality sales leads for the sales people to turn into orders
The Sales dept job is to turn sales leads generated by marketing into orders,
that works for businesses selling to businesses.
A lot of marketing people like to have broad fuzzier stuff about corporate identity emotional engagement with the client etc but most entrepreneurs I know prefer the hard sales approach.
In retail consumer marketings where I have little experience I guess that marketing is more to do with getting people aware of the store, what you sell, getting people to visit the store (or website) and sales people are there ot get them to spend money once they cross the threshold.
A lot of the traditional rules and definitions don't work very well for on line businesses. When does marketing stop and sales beginning for Amazon?
Marketing people should regard the sales guys as their bosses. in many companies it is the other way round and they suffer for it.

You will often hear of the "four P's" of Marketing: Product, Price, Promotion and Placement. Sales is part of Placement, which falls under the general Marketing umbrella.
Generally, if you are a non-sales marketing exec, your responsibilities can include any of the following: market research, product development, advertising, trade promotion, brand management and product management.
Anyone who has worked in a Sales or Marketing department can tell you that the two go hand-in-hand, even if they are considered separate departments.

Simply put, sales is getting the consumer to buy the product and ensuring the product is in an accessible source to buy it like a shop, and marketing is advertising and making the consumer aware that the product exists.
Hope this helps! :D

Sales, is creating the contract or agreement between the goods/services and the CASH!! Marketing is how you want to present your goods/services to the general public. How do you want your business to look, who is your ideal customer? It is kinda like going out on the town with a bunch of friends. What do I wear, where are we going to go? That sort of thing. It is how you dress up and HOW you sell yourself (goods/services) to others.

in common parlance, marketing is for strategising and propagating a product so that it sells in POS while sales is the nitty gritty of actually emptying out the shop shelves.
