I show respect to my employees by NEVER tlking down to them, they are the reason I am still in business. I reward good employees with more than a "good job" I take all my mechanics and their families to either Cedar point or Kings Island every year. Three years running
They love it when we close the shop for them, It is not their vacation time I pay them. We all pile on a bus and head for Ohio. If any of them are reading this I will let it out, now. in '07 we are taking a week and going to Disney World....I am purchasing a package for all 12 of us and our families, as the guys have children between 6 and 17. So Merry Christams guys and don't worry 'bout askin the boss for time off. I'll be there too. I'll be honest it is costing me over 100K but you know what. I personally made a lot more than that. and who better to thank than the families of these mechanics, sometimes we work 'till midnight if there is a problem or a customer comes in at 5 and says help me. We do. We turn no one away. Thanks guys. How did I do it, I invest, not only in my future but the future of my employees.

Our expression of respect has changed slightly since it's only 12 employees vs. when in Corp America... now it's acknowleging the hard work ethic that each possesses. The willingness to help their fellow worker and my effort to celebrate their birthday. We tend to have lunch dinners provided from the sales of soft drinks and my own pocket. Which has sparked other employees willingness to pot luck meals. Bonus are given quarterly and they received them last Friday rather than first week of the New Year.
Corporate America- our CEO knew every employee name in the plant. Employees were encouraged to take foreign language classes during lunch free of charge. There are a range of free to low cost opportunities for each employee, their family to participate in if they choose.
Written acknowlegements of dedication, commitment, and well excuted projects. Which when came time for review and raises help to distribute the appropriate financial raises.
It's not always those with the Masters who are rewarded but the ideas of the long, loyal employee who happens to be an expert in the actual production of it's products. The most innovative changes have happen by the employees manufacturing the products. They constantly offer ways of improving production, service and our purchasing dept is outstanding in their sourcing of raw goods to produce our product.
It's being part of a Team which is slowly detoriating. Longevity is no longer considered an asset. Values, ethics have really changed. No longer does someone word count for much these days in corp America.

Don't feel horrible. You were absolutely correct. Put up a little sign: Breakfast served until 11 a.m. or something along those lines. Many restaurants do this, however, some restaurants serve breaky all day. These apes were taking advantage of your good nature. I trust the employee who verbally abused you is now a 'former' employee. Walking out constitutes as quitting.

Pay them well. Make them feel proud of their work and part of your enterprise. Share their sorrow and happiness. Do not through them out when they become old and less useful to you.Provide them comfort when they are in need. Respect and devotion are two sided. If you are devoted to your employees then you will find the same echo doubly from them.

By listening to them, not barking orders or yelling at them. If they are talkers, say, "that's interesting" and leave it at that. Employees DO have good ideas. Respect that. Be a good listener, but dont let them control you.

Respect should be in heart; superficial respect is viewed in suspician. Even if you cannot show, respect your employees as they are your real assets.
