If you can afford it then buy the best Gibson Les Paul or Fender Stratocaster there is out there. If you are on a budget then why not go with a Jackson or Even a B.C. Rich. When I first started playing I bought a B.C. Rich Warlock guitar with Floyd Rose lock-ins and changed out the factory pick-ups and installed Seymour Duncan's in it and it still sounds great. There is a company called Musicians Friend that sells just about every sort of insturment there is out there and sells them really cheap. Check out thier website and you will see what I mean. That is where I buy all of my equipment.

There's alot of them to choose from, my son plays and he has three electric guitars, Fender Stratocaster, Dean, and in the past year he got an esp ltd x400 with active pick ups which was around 800.00, which he really likes this guitar, he plays alot of heavy metal music. He has a PA system and Marshall half stack. He really likes the sound of the guitar for playing that kind of music.
